A rare inert gas occuring in the atmosphere in 18 parts per million and obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air. Neon has 40 times more refigerating capacity per unit volume than liquid helium and hydrogen and less expensive. Discovered in 1898 by Ramsay, Travers.
